This is a "sticky" post, which will always be at the top of the community's page. If you're new to dw_cosplay, this is where you'll want to start.

The complete community rules are here but, in a nutshell:

  • You must be a member of the community in order to post here. If you're not a member, you're not going to see 90% of the posts on this community. Blame the Russian spambots for that one...

  • If you wish to sell something, do NOT POST IT HERE. Please visit our sibling community dwcosplay_sales

  • If you are looking for a one-stop resource for a specific character, we have some fantastic character-breakdowns on this community. Links may be found on our profile page - scroll about halfway down to see the list.

  • Please use tags with your post, as that makes things MUCH easier for visitors looking for material. We have 2100+ members and tens of thousands of posts. You can find a list of all of our tags here.

  • If you want to post any pictures, please use a cut-tag after the first picture. Learn what a cut-tag is and how to use one here

  • We expect people to play nicely with each other. Spirited discussion is okay. Name-calling and sh*t-stirring is not. The moderators are the arbiters of what is or isn't nice. Problem users will receive one warning before being banned.

  • The moderators are britgeekgrrl, honorarydoctor and magic_and_stars.

  • Heaven forbid, but if LiveJournal ever suffers a catastrophic and permanent meltdown, go to www.doctorwhocosplay.com and that domain name will point to whatever lifeboat we push out. Best thing to do is to bookmark that URL and visit us via that route - you'll always be able to find us, then.

With DragonCon just a couple of months away, don't forget to join in on the Doctor Who events if you are attending!

Most importantly, if you are planning on marching in the parade, you need to let us known ASAP! There are a limited number of slots in the parade, and if we don't fill all our spots, we are in danger of losing them. So if you want to march in the Doctor Who group of the DragonCon parade, go over to the parade signup thread and add your name to the list!

As usual, we are also having a group dinner and a group photo shoot so if you want more details on those, click on through to the appropriate thread. Hope you get to come!
TimeGate is a Doctor Who 'verse and British Media con taking place in Atlanta, GA, USA, the weekend of May 22-24, 2015. Guests of Honor are Michelle Gomez (Missy) and Katy Manning (Jo Grant), along with many other guests. Please see the website for more info:

TimeGate has moved to a new hotel, the Marriott Century Center. The Wardrobe Portal will be in DeKalb I.

Currently, as Director of the TG costuming/cosplay track, I'm looking for a few more panelists for these panels:

Friday night

7 PM New Who Cosplay -- one or two more panelist(s)

10 PM Who Knits -- two to four knitters needed -- if you are knitting the 4th Doctor's scarf (whichever variation), have a clever pattern for Tardis mittens, or you've created tiny dolls of the Doctors, anything knitted, tatted, etc., Who 'verse, bring it along!

10 AM Torchwood -- two more panelists needed

3 PM The Doctor's Wardrobe: The Third Doctor -- two more 3rd Doctors welcomed (femme Doctors, of course, are fine!) and/or anyone well-versed in his many costumes. Classic Era UNIT personnel, and any Dr. Liz Shaws, Jo Grants, and SJS (in Season 11 attire only) in the audience might be called upon to show off their costumes. :)

10 AM Missy and Her Elegant Wardrobe -- two more Missys needed

4 PM Cosplay/Costuming 101 -- the topics are how to determine what character you might want to cosplay as, where to locate costume resources, and whether to cosplay or just costume. Two or three panelists needed.

If you've been on one of the TG costume track panels before and haven't heard from me, please PM or email me at acciochocolate at livejounal dot com right away. (I'm having computer issues and have lost some contact info.) If you are a member of the Prydon Academy, check your PMs there as well. Also, I'll be sending LJ PMs, and emails as I can. Of course, I'm always looking for new panelists, esp. if you've done Who-verse costume panel(s) at other cons. :) See contact info above.

My rules for panelists are easy common sense. :) Please be on time, be kind to other panelists, and answer politely when taking questions from audience members. Panels end at 10 minutes before the hour, as the Wardrobe Portal shares space with the lit track. If an attendee comes up to the table afterwards to ask questions of you, please be kind but have them walk with you out to the hallway for more chatting ASAP.

Please forgive the lateness of these requests, due to laptop woes, but I do need firm commitments by April 30 for any of these panels. I can *add* panelists after that, but your name won't be in the TG program book or on the TG program site.

Thanks again and see you at TimeGate this year!
Hello everyone! Just a reminder about the Amy Pond Paradox photoshoot we host at Dragon*Con every year--if you have an Amy costume and want to come hang out, the signup list is right here!

I hope everyone is having a good summer and getting excited for Dragon*Con. :)

Dear Community,
I want to thank you for the great knowledge source you share here. I found this site while looking for information for the outfits of a Doctor Who cosplay group I did with my friends. Thanks to many specifications we were able to track down some screen accurate items for Ten, Martha, Donna and Rose (another outfit not yet pictured). I hope it is o.k. to share some pictures (it is my first post here) - I will also gladly answer questions :-) (Also, as I did Ten and Martha: there are no premade costumes used: I just altered store-bought/vintage items like the coat, suit, leather jacket when I could not find SA items)

Hello everyone! It's that time of year again...Dragon*Con is only a few months away so it's time to start signups for the 2014 (Fifth Annual!) Dragon*Con Pond Paradox Photoshoot. We've got a photographer and we're ready to go! Also, we will still be going with the one person per costume rule that we've used since the beginning. This isn't meant to exclude anyone; it just provides for more variety and more unique photos.

Rules, details, and signup spots beneath the cut!

Folks, this really important! I don't usually make Off-Topic posts, but this is too far-reaching and everyone should be aware. Everyone is welcome to copy & paste, and post the info elsewhere.

Yahoo, Facebook, and Gmail are affected, and more. Everyone should change their passwords.

"An encryption flaw called the Heartbleed bug is already being called one of the biggest security threats the Internet has ever seen. The bug has affected many popular websites and services, ones you might use every day, like Gmail and Facebook, and could have quietly exposed your sensitive account information (such as passwords and credit card numbers) over the past two years.

But it hasn't always been clear which sites have been affected. Mashable reached out some of the most popular social, email, banking and commerce sites on the web. We've rounded up their responses below."

There are patches being applied. Check any web site using this service. If it rates A, it's been patched. Go ahead and change your password.

this will be my first cosplay and i want to be the moment aka the interface/billie piper's character from the 50th. i was wondering is anybody had suggestions on where to find pieces for it

While I'm absolutely certain that this is not where the screen-used trousers came from, I just happened to have a pair of trousers that I thought were an incredible match for Capaldi's, aside from the direction of the pleats.

Pictures under the cut...Collapse )

If anyone wants to wait to see another example before deciding, I'm planning to order another pair, requesting the forward pleats. I'll write up a review of them once I get them in.

This weekend there was a one day DW con here in Sydney with Paul McGann & Daphne Ashbrook as two of the guests.  I only had 3 weeks to make myself a femme version of the 8th Doctor's costume.  Even more of a problem for me is that I only allowed myself to use fabric already in my stash - other than the brocade.  I had to tell myself it was steampunk inspired as I don't have screen accurate fabric and my brain was twitching.

I used a striped linen/rayon for the skirt, paisley embroidered white on white cotton for the blouse and stash coutil + purchased inaccurate brocade for the corset (and 3 different stash cottons for the petticoat, it took 4.5m). I have a shot blue/green lightweight denim for a jacket or coat but ran out of time to make it.  If anyone wants to know what patterns I used I can add that info. I also need to get red enamel paint to finish my sonic, and track down the correct tardis key,

There were other great costumes there - including a second and a thirdCollapse )

and many ten's .. which I forgot to take photos of.

Short version:

We would like to raise $55 to keep certain features on this community going for the next year. Feel free to donate via Paypal.

UPDATE: $60 raised! Thanks! If you would like to contribute to future costs of the community, please do! I'll keep the button active for the meantime. :)

UPDATE #2: Wow! The community's costs through the end of 2015 are now covered! Thanks, everyone!!

Screengrabs of receipts for the related tranasactions.

Long version:

As you know, we maintain several features on this community that cost cash money: the paid status of this LJ and the two domain names, doctorwhocosplay.com and dwcosplay.com.

The paid status of the community keeps the space ad-free and allows us to utilize a customized layout which makes the tags/memories a lot easier for visitors to browse and find what they're looking for.

The domain names serve two purposes. First, it's a lot easier to remember dwcosplay.com than http://community.livejournal.com/dw_cosplay when bragging up the community in various contexts (and it fits more easily within a business card/program blurb, too!). Secondly, it's part of our ongoing "lifeboat" regimen - the domain names will always direct you to the current home of the community, even if the Russian mafia LJ overlords, abruptly shut-down English-language operations and leave us high and dry*. Such planning is the sort of thing that doesn't sound important until suddenly, it is. We like it here on LJ and hope to remain, but catastrophes can happen...

The moderators would really appreciate it if you, the members, could help us out with those costs. The mods have been carrying them out-of-pocket since the beginning, but circumstances have us a little strapped for cash, this time around.

Renewal time for the domain names is coming up on December 23rd, and the annual renewal for the community's paid status is coming up in February. For the sake of simplicity, we're tackling both matters, now.

Renewal for the domains is $15 per year, each ($30/total) and the costs of a paid LJ community is $25/year.

If you can spare a dollar or two, please donate via Paypal by clicking on the big shiny button.

If you don't fancy the idea of throwing money into a stranger's PayPal bucket (and I totally understand that) you can buy paid time for the community, directly - just be very sure to designate dw_cosplay as the recipient under "gift options".

All donations will be used for the benefit of the community. ETA: screengrabs of receipts may be seen here.

If, by whatever means, the costs for the community for the next five years are met, then I will immediately deactivate the Paypal button and edit this post, just for the sake of modesty. Of course, it would be awesome if we didn't have to worry about these costs for another five years, but I think planning beyond that would smack of hubris. Then again, dw_cosplay has been here for over SEVEN YEARS so maybe I'm selling us short... ;)

Questions, concerns, etc, please bring 'em on.

ETA: Why do we maintain two domain names? Because for regulars of the community, dwcosplay.com is shorter to type/easy to remember, but it's not intuitive for a stranger, which is why I tend to use the longer name doctorwhocosplay.com when talking about the community in a public forum. There's also my paranoia about dealing with potential confusion if another entity set up shop under the longer name, so I think it's in the community's best interests to hang on to it...

*It nearly happened in the past, and I'm not certain the risk is over.

I have IDd the dress trim for Time of Angels. It's a 12 mm beaded trim, originally costing $25 US from a now defunct company in the UK. I have contacted a chinese firm about recreating the trim based on samples. The cost would be roughly $4 a yard, give or take. Unfortunately, they will only create a bulk order, with a minimum of 200 yards.
If I can drum up enough interest, I will place a sample order and see about getting this made.
Most Rivers will need between 2-4 yards for a dress, depending on your size. I'm asking that folks look at ordering 4 yards as that gets us closer to our goal.
Is anyone interested?

If you have any questions leave them in the comments. Hope to see some of the group at NYCC!
Andy Teal, who runs the Pyrdon Academy board for the Doctor Who'verse costumers/cosplayers who hang out at Dragoncon (march in the parade, have video-and-photoshoots, a big group dinner, etc.) and other cons, has an appeal for any DW, SJA, and TW fans and costumers in the Atlanta area right now, and any DW'verse fans and cosplayers who are arriving early for Dragoncon next week: basically they need help finishing up the parade float.

If you are a DW'verse costumer and attend Dragoncon, please consider joining the Pyrdon Academy board here:
http://www.prydonacademy.com/ . It's free and takes only a minute to sign up. Once you are on the PA board you can contact Andy direct about helping in the Dragoncon Parade Float thread. There's a direct link below for those of you already on the PA board.

Under the cut, is Andy's request for help w/ the D*C parade float:

Augh, fiiiiinally wrote my Gally report!

It's a bit more wordy than they usually are, with fewer pics, but there are a few so if you wanna see if I snapped you:

Also, PS, etc, did I miss when the screening default became members only? I mean, is there a reason for that? 'Cause I've changed this post to public, if that's a problem...?

Okay so, I had a silly idea. I know a lot of us Whovians have been getting Clara's 50th anniversary dress as it is dirt cheap (fordoctorwho) (hahahaI'dneverthink40buckswasdirtcheapotherwise) and it's super cute. I also know alot of us like me actually have no intention of cosplaying Clara IT'S JUST A CUTE DRESS. I know alot of my friends have gotten it and we were joking about all wearing it at the same time and getting pictures of it.

Soooo why don't we do that? I was thinking at SDCC maybe on preview night (as it is, you know, preview night so not a super!important cosplay day) we could get a group of us together in our pretty dress, take silly pictures, and then maybe all go to a bar/more likely just to get dinner as there's always someone under 21 and hang out and generally be awesome :)

So, yes. That is my plan. If anyone is interested I'll edit this with an actual meet up time and place (7 maybe? Maybe at the entrance to the Gaslamp?) and suggestions for places to get dinner (Old Spaghetti Factory?) and yeah, things :)

16 April 2013 @ 05:40 pm

So I managed to snag a really excellent alt to Clara's Roadmaster Belstaff jacket off of ebay, and I thought I'd post some pictures! I'm really happy with it, and I'd definitely recommend grabbing it if you see one.

It's by Guess, and was listed under "Guess Motorcycle Utility Jacket," so I'd recommend tracking similar tags if you're looking for an alt.

UPDATE: Nine looks to be taken care of, so we're now really focusing on Eight. Anyone out there with a solid, waist-up Eight costume?

After a resounding success with our last request post for Five, Six, and Seven, I was hoping to ask this amazing forum for their help with the next batch of Doctor Who specials I'm making for my web series, Geek Crash Course.

Here's our Third Doctor entry in the series:

Anywho, we currently need costumes for the Eighth and Tenth Doctors and the Ninth Doctor's jacket for our next batch of episodes, filming in May, so we can avoid keeping your Doctor or companion outfit out of commission for SDCC.  Also, we only need costumes from the waist-up, which might make things easier.

I'd happily pay for shipping to and from New York City, keep your costume pieces in the absolute best of care, and (of course) give you credit in the episode.

The main concern is the Eighth Doctor's costume, so any help there would be amazing. A proper Nine jacket would be amazing too, as I only have a wool peacoat and that's hardly proper.

We'd also love your companion outfits if you have them, specifically Grace for Eight and Rose for Nine. Luckily, we already have a Donna outfit for Ten that I think is going to blow your minds.

In terms of sizing (given in US), we're:
Me: 40R-42R jacket, M/L shirt
Diana: between a ladies size 4 and 6 in jackets and pants, ladies S/M shirt

Feel free to post below or get in touch by e-mail at geekcrashcourse [at] gmail [dot] com.

Thanks so much and looking forward to your responses!
