The ULTIMATE Tennant Suit
If you've visited my Tenannt Suit blog lately, you'll have seen that I have been working on a Tennant Suit made from six pairs of original GAP trousers!

Well, it's finally finished, and I've just taken some pictures to show how it turned out.

Do let me know what you all think.

SO AWESOME.

Did you save a pair of the trousers to keep as trousers? Or did you reconstruct those as well?
stevericks[info]stevericks on February 12th, 2011 06:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah - I kept a pair to use as 'trousers' !
I've worked so hard on the jacket, the lower part of the suit has been out of my sights for a while as I didn't need to worry about it!

WOW! That is fabulous! I can just about sew on a button and do a "close enough is good enough" hems on pants. I am in awe!

Looks awesome! I'm seriously impressed with how clean it all looks. Was the fabric very well suited for making a jacket, or did it make things more difficult than they needed to be?
stevericks[info]stevericks on February 13th, 2011 08:15 am (UTC)
The fabric is certainly NOT the best to make a suit from!
I used a lot of traditional tailoring techniques, and there are only two pieces of fusible interfacing in the entire jacket (the lapel fronts). To use fusible throughout would be a mistake as it would ruin the nature of the fabric.

The screen-used suit - well cut as it is - does wear quite shabby, with it pulling and creasing. By tailoring the way I have, this has come through.

That is FANTASTIC!

Fantastic, and your tailoring is so well done. Love how you got all the lines to match up perfectly.
stevericks[info]stevericks on February 13th, 2011 08:20 am (UTC)
Ugh! Those pinstripes!
Sometimes they were a blessing to give a line to sew to - other times they were a curse. Some seams had to be sewn to mm precision to make sure pinstripes were aligning the edges of lapels and pocket flaps etc.
Every garment has it's unique challenges.
My real name is Lauren but nobody seems to care.[info]tropicanaomega on February 12th, 2011 08:18 pm (UTC)
I can't believe you did that with disassembled pants! SO impressive, and your use of the lines with those limitations is incredible.
stevericks[info]stevericks on February 13th, 2011 08:24 am (UTC)
Yes - every panel of the suit had to be planned out prior to cutting anything to make sure it would fit on the available fabric, and the pattern had to be redesigned in part to make sure nothing was wider than the width of a trouser leg.
It's just all down to preparation and planning!
Take a look through my blog - I documented each pair of trousers used and what part of the suit came from which pair.
eve11[info]eve11 on February 12th, 2011 09:09 pm (UTC)
Holy smokes that's a gorgeous piece of tailoring. All from disassembled pants? Fantastic.
stevericks[info]stevericks on February 13th, 2011 08:40 am (UTC)
Until you do it for real like this you don't appreciate the work that went into the original screen-used suits.

I tip my own hat to Louise Page and her team.
I can also see why she perceived with using it though - the pinstripes are incredibly striking and no other fabric comes close.
They so easily could have said, "great fabric, but let's find something on a roll that's like it to make our lives easier".
Ironically though, they did do that the next season for the blue suit!

I've been following your blog for awhile now, and I have to say I am SO impressed with your work. I hope you'll do another photoshoot soon - with you wearing the new suit!

Keep an eye on the blog - i'm planning to post some pictures of the suit being modelled - though sadly not of me wearing it.

With all the amazing work you've been documenting and sharing on your costume blogs, if anyone deserves to have a suit that's as genuine-article as anyone will ever get it's you. Well done!

When you get to hear the FULL story in about a week or so - you'll see what a tour de force it actually was.

Molto Benne
Wow that is the best suit ever. Taken alot of care and attention to it, but you must have been so nervous cutting up the material to use it.
Well done.
stevericks[info]stevericks on February 13th, 2011 08:30 am (UTC)
Re: Molto Benne
Oh - you cant imagine how I was bricking it the day I had to cut the first part of the suit!
Not only have you got to position the pattern right so you get the shapes you need, it also has to be aligned correctly with the grain of the fabric AND often with pinstripes so they would edge the lapels etc once sewn - all that PLUS mirroring the pieces perfectly for both sides too!
I got into a rhythm with it though and was cutting with confidence by the end.
