San Diego Comic Con 2011 Report Part Two!
Hey Gang,

So picking up from part one here: http://dw-cosplay.livejournal.com/996030.html

Here's how Friday aka SDCC Day Three went down.

Matt Smith!!!!

More Pics and Info

Another Day at the Con

I was up again at 8:00AM. Yet again I showered fast and then quickly loaded the final 10 boxes in my car. I made the fast and easy trip to the Post office. This time I timed it better and was in and out easy peasy. Happy to have all the figures bought and shipped for 25 or so people on the boards. I only kept three, which would have to be mailed when I got back home since there were last minute add-ons and they hadn’t paid shipping yet.

The Street versions of Booth Babes

I got back to find Ben, Huston and Aubrey setting out on their day. Teri and I suited up as Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel. The costumes look awesome we felt they deserved another outing.

The Marvels Fly again

We walked to the shuttle dressed as the Marvels and a couple of people from up in the tower yelled SHAZAM! at us so I yelled it back. Nice to feel the fan love right? The Shuttle ride was easier this time without 5 huge bags to carry over!

Shazam- wish we could have really flown to the hotel!

As we departed the shuttle, we were treated to some fairly gross tasting Captain America promotional chewing gum (yum!). We also passed by a giant inflatable smurf and Hugh Jackman standing on a trailer talking to fans and taking questions about Real Steel. He seemed pretty cool but we couldn’t stay long and had to move on.

Hugh Jackman - Real Steel

We got to the con and basically wandered on our own for about an hour. We briefly thought about hitting the Starz Panel for Torchwood Miracle Day at 10:00AM but we knew we were running late and our luck wouldn’t hold there. For those interested here’s the full panel on youtube:

John and Eve were scheduled to do a signing on Sunday- interestingly right around the time of the Doctor Who signing do you had to really pick your battles here!

Meeting a Black Canary

Yeaaahhh Mary ain’t down with that whole ‘Kneel Before Zod’ schtick. Puh-lease.

We ran into our Friends Sam and Kelsey dressed as mal Reynolds and Bucky respectively. We caught up and tried to see if he wanted to join us later as Captain Marvel Jr. but that didn’t end up working out.

With Sam and Kelsy.

They did mention to us that in the ‘exclusive fifty dollar’ Sideshow edition of the Comic Con Episode IV A Fan’s Hope book we were not in it as Starfleet members but as Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel (around page 115) right across from Sam and Kelsy as Superman and Supergirl. I guess Sideshow got to pick their own pictures for their edition hence the change up.

Our pic in the Sideshow edition of the Comic Con book

Supergirl and Mary Marvel just never get along

While in this area I spoke to my friend Jason palmer about his artwork. I purchased his latest Serenity art print to go next to several others I have bought from him in the past. He complimented our costumes and always appreciated that we tend to go do Old School in our approach. While admiring the Star War Saga (Ep IV – VI) and his Superman through the ages print (Showing Kirk Alyn through Brandon Routh) I mentioned he ought to finally do a Dr. Who art print. I sold him pretty well on Dr. Who’s currently popularity in the US with BBC America giving it big pushes with Hollywood billboards, EW 4 page ads, how big the fan response currently was at SDCC, the ratings it got etc etc. So not being familiar with the Doctor he said ‘Okay you’re on. I’ll look into doing an art piece covering all of the Doctors if you agree to be my guide and consultant on this since I can’t speak to seeing more than 4 episodes of the current show” Deal! So I’ll be working with him to hopefully bring another cool Doctor Who art piece to the market. If it goes well he may do more Who art so watch his website down the road!

Art Print

Dude. Really? See this lightning bolt on my chest?

From here we stopped off at Dan’s Booth to try and meet up with scott_sebring and our friend Alex as ’66 Batman and Robin. They were running late but Ben met up with us and agreed to be our photographer for a bit so we did a quick spin through the comic book section while we waited for the dynamic duo to arrive.

Stopping at Dan’s booth

Waiting for the dynamic Duo to arrive?

Here we ran into Colonial Time Traveled Hobby the Marvel Bunny! (okay not really but still close enough). We also bumped into a Mr. Mxyzptlk who seemed a little too in character. Although I had to direct Teri to be ‘annoyed’ by him. He’s a thorn in Superman’s side, he’d be a thorn in the marvels too!

Hey Look it’s Hoppy!

A Comic Dealer super happy to see the Marvels

Mary ain’t pleased by ol Mxy.

Sneaking in a sucker punch

We got stopped and interview a couple of time as well. I mainly remember MAXIM asking us a bit about our characters and asking us to recreate an action or moment. So Teri wanted to do the Tom Tyler- holding the biceps pose but I opted for the arms out SHAZAM moment. Although I think they were fairly amused how I was directing Teri to put her arms out with mine. Who knows if they ended up using any of it!

Directing the talent

That’s a wrap

We brushed paths with Batman, the Red hood, Darth Vader, Captain Planet, and a lot of appreciative fans running the dealer booths. One guy was nice enough to let us pose with an original golden Age Captain Marvel comic (worth a measly $775.00).

Captain America and Captain Marvel. Two Captains From the Golden Age!!!!!

I stopped briefly to check out the new Captain Marvel and Black Adam retro Mego Toys by Mattel too.

Now THIS one is the hot seller.

Ben and I stopped at the poster stall where they had the awesome Captain Marvel three sheet the year before. But it was Sold now. Bummer. They had the Captain Marvel Serial re-release poster from 1966 though. But it was still $100- I was on a budget and to top it off the poster colored Cap BLUE. So I passed. Ben checked out some interesting Spanish posters for the ’66 Batman movie but the Shakespeare Bust was still his priority so he passed too.

Hanging with Spideys.

Swinging back, we finally met up with scott_sebring and Alex. Batman & Robin does Brave and the Bold with… The Marvel Family!

Brave and the Bold!

We ran into a lot of cool fans. One had some neat POW! BANG! Buttons for us to pose with. We also ran into a Dick Tracy and several other cool characters.

Pow bang!

While we had fun posing for fans young and old, the big highlight at this time was making a beeline for the Creature Features booth to get a photo in costume with that super fabulous Christopher Reeve Superman Statue. The Reeve Sculpt was done by Mike Hill and he did a SUPERLATIVE job. He even aimed to get Reeve’s Superman III physique because he felt that’s when he looked his best.

Posing with Sculptor Mike Hill.

In real life Reeve was SUPER tall! (even accounting for the podium)

The Superman costume is a modified Action Costumes commission. This was roped off but luckily Mike himself was there and scott_sebring had met him previously so it helped grease the wheels and let us in. It wasn’t for sale but man if it was I’d have seriously considered parting with a kidney for one of these beauties.

Justice League!

Big three

On the way up to the Sails

Mxyzptlk Amuses Batman. He ain’t no Bat-Mite.

In the Sails Pavilion, we ran into a pretty cool Superman so we could get some ‘big four’ shots. Mr. Mxyzptlk popped in form the 5th Dimension to tug on Superman’s cape. Again the guy seemed to take the role a bit far. I hear he was also the Penguin the next day.

The time kinda flew by as we wandered around. Pretty soon, Ben and Teri had to leave to change into Bat-Gear for the upcoming Batman 45th anniversary Panel with Adam West, Burt Ward, Julie Newmar at 6PM. So it was just Batman, Robin and Captain Marvel pulling some trio action for a while. This created one problem… Ben left with the camera and my own camera was left at Dan’s booth. It was the only time of the con I was without a camera for about 1-2 hours and I learned hard here. Read on.

We stopped by the Lightspeed booth where they were having the Adam West and Burt Ward Photo op. We were there for moral support really. The Lightspeed guys seemed happy we were there but mostly it was a stand and watch scene.

Adam West- Photo Op!

Right next door to this booth was the Holzeimer’s stall. Yep- the same one John barrowman signed at I 2008/2009 that got on his bad side. Well he wasn’t there this time but some actress I vaguely recognized was. She wa sin the middle of doing an interview for some website so I didn’t approach. Alex seeing I was trying to make out who she was just looped around the booth Boy Wonder style and came back to say “She’s someone named Stacy Haiduk. Never hear dof her.” “Stacy Haiduk????” I replied “You mean Lana Lang from Superboy!!” (Yes folks, shame me if you like I was a big Superboy fan when it aired. Tights and flights - that’s how Superboy is done!) In the middle of her interview she turned around, spotted the three of us and said “That’s great! You’ve got Batman, Robin.. and oh look the Flash!”

Stacy Haiduk today.

I was a bit crestfallen. scott_sebring and Alex gave me some snickers. Stacy Haiduk had no clue who Captain Marvel was. Not even a token Shazam!? But hey you know… when you’ve been flying around with the Boy of Steel, I guess no one compares and you get hero tunnel vision. Right. (Even though Captain Marvel could wipe the floor with even a SILVER AGE Superboy... but nevermind... ahem. I like Superboy. Really.)

So we turned to pose for someone’s camera when Alex turns to me and says ‘Stacy doesn’t realize the $20 in autograph fee she just lost with THAT comment huh?” Well I busted up laughing and totally ruined this guy’s pic. I couldn’t hold it. I walked off to let them get batman and Robin together. I need a few teary eyes minutes to re-compose. Thanks again for that Alex.

Well look, I decided I already had autographs of the two actors to play Superboy but not one from Lana. Okay I’d splurge and make this happen despite the Flash comment. But I looked at her table… all Seaquest DSV shots… No Superboy. I called over to the woman running the booth and asked where the Superboy shots were. “Oh sorry we didn’t bring any- we didn’t think anyone wuld remember the show. We have some glamour photos though” What???? This was Comic Con. Geek central. The ONE place you’re bound to get people who would remember Superboy! Yeesh. Well phoey, I wanted a Lana Lang picture, no substitutes. Dang. Well I thought maybe get a photo…. Oh wait. No Camera! ARGH. Well dang it, I was going to say hi to her anyway.

Stacy as she appeared on Superboy

Anyway after about 20-30 minutes her interview wraps and they let her go form the table. Oh well, moment missed. BUT then she turned and headed up our aisle. So I introduced myself, said I as a big fan of the show. “Thanks! You look great!” (She wisely avoided calling me the Flash again lol) “Do you come here every year? Do you dress u like this for these events?” I told her I did and got a little into the costume/superhero thing when suddenly the Holzeimer’s guys started yelling at me. scott_sebring was trying to run interference for me but it was a bit useless. Apparantly in the crowd and in my attempt to give Stacy some breathing space in talking I’d backed against the side table and my cape knocked over one of their High School Musical 3 mugs. And I’m pretty sure it was the plastic kind too, not ceramic. Anyway the guy was FLIPPING out about how I was damaging merchandise and we had to move.

Female Robin

Spidey’s Super cool web slung backpack

So I tried to shift downwards and carry on the conversation but the guy wouldn’t let up. I had to make a hasty goodbye and handshake to Stacy then deal with this guy. Now we were still partly blacking about three feet of the end of the booth where the photos/cards were. “You’re still blocking the booth guys. I’m calling security on you!” scott_sebring kept his cool, told the guy he was crossing the line from being impolite to rude and we quietly moved on. Keep in mind. We’d been standing there in that spot for the 30 minutes or so Stacy was interviewing without a problem. I suspect the real reason they were flipping out is because we were talking to one of their guests off the clock and off the dime.

Legend of Zelda

Battle of the planets

After checking in with Adam West’s agent that we weren’t needed anymore, we moved on. We ran into a great Superman and Aquaman by the gaming area. “Either of you have a camera? No? Oh well” Photo op missed. Again, my lesson learned. We then paraded through artists’s Alley. We know these guys are tucked way off to the side and often miss the action to se like to show off the cool costumes to these guys. One guy was really thrilled as he some really nice 1966 Batman sketches of The Joker, Riddler, Adam and Burt at his table.

Female Galactus wins this round

Captain Planet to the Rescue

On the way back, scott_sebring made a point of stopping at one of the booths selling some nifty Daybill sized posters of the old 60’s Model kit artwork as well as ‘imagining’s of artwork/models that were never released. Three of them were a really nice prisoner, Emma Peel and John Steed Posters. I made a note to run back and pick these up!

[Bad username: “scott_sebring”] points me to the posters

Batgirl joins us

Finally we made our way to the 2nd floor for the Batman panel where Teri as Batgirl had met up with us. I made a point to stop and get my Camera first! Unfortunately the line was massive! It only seated about 400-500 people and the lines already had about 700 waiting. So we weren’t getting in. Yeah, well it’s not that we live for panels but we had bad luck with them at this SDCC. So we posed for a lot of pics for the waiting bat-fans. I saw some cool Villagers from the Prisoner who told me they’d Be Seeing Me. (I am not a Number!!!)

Be Seeing You

Then Ben (who’d already done a brief stint in his own ’66 Batman costume and changed out again purely to take photos) and flibertyjibitz as ’66 Catwoman found us. They were riding HIGH. Well prepare for engines for warp factor ludicrous speed because here’s the story.

flibertyjibitz joins us as Catwoman.

While flibertyjibitz was running late changing into Catwoman. Ben was changing out of Batman back at the Manchester Hyatt. He got his camera and they rushed to meet us. This was around 5PM. Low and behold they get in the Elevator and there was MATT SMITH and KAREN GILLAN!!! Matt and Karen were impressed with the costume. “Oh wow, cool! Catwoman!” They both tried to hold their cool for a moment and then burst into fanboyisms “OHMYGOD I LOVE YOU GUYS. IM SUCH A BIG FAN!” flibertyjibitz ‘flibbertied’ at them. She asked for a photo with them. And Ben realized he had only brought his long lenses assumed he’d be mainly photographing the Batman panel. Matt and Karen were super cool though.. “It’s alright. We’ll wait down by the cash machine since we need money for dinner anyway. Change your lenses and come back down for your picture” And that’s what they did! Super cool or what?

The Smith Pic Take 1- with shades

Ben ran back up and down in record time. Sure enough there they were and flibertyjibitz got a great pic. Mat even said they should take another as he had his shades still on! Apparently Karen wasn’t feeling tip top and was suffering from a mild fever so they then went on their way to dinner while Ben and flibertyjibitz came to meet us. So you CAN see Karen red hair in the background of the 1st pic!

The Smith Pic Take 2- No Shades. The Money Shot.

The Whole crew

With Brian Chanes of Profiles in History/Hollywood Treasure.

So after cycling down from that story… we posed for some more pics. But by now I was dying. My feet were murdering me so after about 15 minutes I made my leave while the Bat-Crew continued sailing for about another hour.

Posing with a happy fan

And Shazam- Captain Marvel’s gone.

Batman and Crew

I managed to swing back and get those Avengers/Prisoner poster as well as some Doctor Who posters at the main Poster stall just in case I got lucky with the autograph tickets. I spotted a couple of the Knights from Monty Python and the Holy Grail on the way out- complete with coconuts. That made me laugh.

Camelot! It’s only a model.

Dirty Harry has nothing on this.

Meanwhile our heroes take time out for the small citizens of Gotham city.

The Bat Group took their time in the Sails Pavilion and walking down out the back before heading out of the con center behind me.

Notice how they have to LOOK at the stairs as the descend. Cowls create mean tunnel vision.

Fighting crime and lookin’ cool.

The typical crowd sight one encounters just LEAVING con for the day.

I limped wimpy Billy Batson feet back to the Hyatt Room and gratefully changed into my civvies. I did another round of texts, ninjarisu was going to join us again for dinner and I reconfirmed with everyone about the Doctors and Sunday.

Finding the back way to the hotel… Heroic Walk- evildoers beware.

Heroic Walk the JJ Abrams Version

Our friend Adrian did not expect… Cat-nuggies!

cheapasair though was still tentative. He was due to interview Matt Smith and wanted to do it in one of his Eleven costumes. This left virtually no time for him to change into Five on Sunday. Hmmmm. So I texted Bumblebeetuna about being Five for us.

Seaport Village

Finally the Gang all got back and changed out of costume. We all decided to hit the Seaport Village area behind the Hyatt/Marriot away from the bustle of the Gaslamp. It’s a nice quiet open food court right by the water. Tri and I enjoyed the Greek food. I was digging it so much I went seconds on the Baklava. As we walked back we kept hoping for a repeat of the good luck mojo to find Matt and Karen back in the elevator. I mean we KNEW they had to be at the Hyatt in our Tower now right? But it was not to be.

Catwoman! Scratch, Scratch!

Catwoman and Batgirl!

Finally we gathered out stuff. The Marvel costumes, the last bit of Who swag I got for someone, etc and headed off. We got the curb, only to find we had a shuttle failure. Out of all the lines running, ours was stopped or backed up or something. The lines was three times longer than usual and the shuttle didn’t show up for 30 minutes. Sooo we sucked it up and cabbed it back to the hotel.

Batman and Robin!

I was relieved not to have any more toys or mailing boxes to deal with. Ben continued to hem and haw some more on buying the Shakespeare bust. How would he ship it back or bring it back to the UK?? Aubrey and Huston shared more tales of hitting panels, schmoozing with some execs and buying more stuff. They made for cool and interesting company. Chris and Simon usually provided a very loopy sense of humor to past SDCCs and they seemed to be filling their absence nicely. Though maybe not quite as weird. You’d have to be there. With these thoughts floating in my mind, I passed out.

Entry on Saturday and Sunday to follow!

Thanks for the compliments. Adam has seen me many times over the years and we have had more than a few chuckles together. He's a great guy and my all time favorite Batman.

I've yet to meet Matt Smith myself though...(kicks invisible pebble on the ground)

I know this is a Doctor Who group and all, but I LOVE the 66 Batman costumes! Batman has a great jawline for it, and that particular Catwoman costume will always be my favorite version of the character.

Great to hear that Matt Smith was just a cool guy! I find that when I meed a celeb it often changes my whole view on him/her. It could make me love the person more or make me want to never watch any of the actor's work again!
honorarydoctorhonorarydoctor on August 29th, 2011 08:12 pm (UTC)
I was super happy to see/hear how cool Matt and Karen were wit the fans and us. And yeah Scott and Vickie always do phenom work on the Batman costumes. Glad you liked them.

I feel SDCC is hard to navigate for celebs unless you REAALLY plan for it or you're VERY lucky.
Aimeeaimeekitty on August 29th, 2011 08:30 pm (UTC)
I think I've just been spoiled by some previous luck. :)

It's very hard to do a booth and do almost anything else, also.

ah, as to Gallifrey, most likely!
